1. Establishment

The Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology, popularly known as IBAB, was established as an autonomous not-for-profit Institution by Government of Karnataka in 2000 with a vision to contribute to the field of bioinformatics by focusing on education and research, entrepreneurship and innovation.

2. Regulatory and Tax Status

IBAB was formed under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act, 1960 vide registration certificate number 737/2000-01 dated December 07, 2000.

3. Recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SlRO)

IBAB has been recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Govt. of India under the Scheme on Recognition of Scientific and Industrial Research Organizations (SIROs), 1988. The recognition is duly renewed vide No. 14/328/2001-TU-V dated April 15, 2024 for the period up to March 31, 2027.

4. Registration under Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR)

IBAB has been registered with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Govt. of India and the registration is valid up to March 31, 2027.

5. Exemptions/Approvals under Income Tax Act, 1961

IBAB has been granted an exemption under section 12A of the Income Tax Act, 1961, vide initial letter number DIT(E)/12A/Vol.I/W-1/I-203/03-04 dated April 23, 2003 and recent approval for AY 2022-2023 to AY 2026-2027 dated April 07, 2022.

IBAB has also been granted approval under section 80G(5) of Income Tax Act 1961 for its scientific research activities as per initial notification DIT(E)BLR/80G(R)/221/AAAT11554P/ITO(E)-1/Vol 2009-2010 dated August 26, 2009 and recent approval for AY 2022-2023 to AY 2026-2027 dated April 07, 2022.
