Dr. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has endowed a prestigious lecture series at IBAB. Running for over 10 years now, this lecture series has brought some of the best scientists in the world to the IBAB campus. Details of the lectures are provided below:
Prof. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan
The first lecture in the Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw lecture series was given by Prof. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, (Division of Structural Studies, Medical Research Council, Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, England & 2009 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome) on 22 December 2011. The talk was on ‘Ribosomes structure and function’.
The second lecture was given by Prof. Dinshaw J. Patel (Abby Rockefeller Mauze Chair in Experimental Therapeutics, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, New York & Member, National Academy of Sciences, USA) on 6 January 2014. The talk was on ‘Structure- function studies of cytosolic DNA sensors governing the interferon response’.
The third lecture in this series was given by Prof. Sangeeta Bhatia (John J. and Dorothy Wilson Professor at the Institute of Medical Engineering and Science (IMES), & Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) of Massachusetts Institute of Technology) on 23 February 2015. The talk was on ‘Tiny technologies and Medicines: Microfabricated livers and cancer nanotechnology’.
The fourth lecture was given by Prof. Ram Sasisekharan (Alfred H. Caspary Professor of Biological Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA) on 27 August 2016. The talk was on ‘Convergence of Life Sciences with Engineering. A perspective on this “Third Revolution”.
The fifth lecture in this series was given by Prof. Arul M. Chinnaiyan (Director of Michigan Center for Translational Pathology, and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He is also S. P. Hicks Professor of Pathology & Urology at the University of Michigan Medical School) on 22 December 2017. The talk was on ‘The Application of Integrative Sequencing for Precision Oncology’.
The sixth lecture in this series was given by Prof. Ashok Venkitaraman (Ursula Zoellner Professor of Cancer Research at the University of Cambridge, UK and Director of the MRC Cancer Unit) on 4 January 2019. The talk was on ‘From cancer susceptibility mechanisms towards early intervention in cancer’.
The seventh lecture in this series was given by Prof. Vamsi K Mootha (Professor of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School and is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. He is also associated with the Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Broad Institute in Cambridge.) on 1 February 2020. The talk was on ‘Mitochondria, Oxygen and Human Disease’.

The eight lecture in this series was given by Prof. Sir Tom L Blundell, FRS (Heart and Lung Research Institute, Department of Medicine, Royal Papworth Hospital, NHS Foundation Trust, Cambridge CB2 0BD, UK) on 15 March 2023. The talk was on ‘Structural Biology, Bioinformatics and Drug Discovery: Targeting Cancer, Mycobacterial Infections and Covid-19’.
